Lack of acceptance affects autistic people’s mental health

An article in the Independent reports on a study which suggests that autistic people’s mental health is affected by a lack of acceptance from others. The research surveyed 111 autistic adults, and found that those who didn’t feel their autism was accepted had higher rates of depression and stress. The study also found that many autistic people “masked” their autism in certain circumstances, which also led to higher rates of depression.
