Autism acceptance may impact on mental health

Hi all

We've added a news story about some research published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders which explored how experiences of autism acceptance impacted on autistic people's mental health. The research surveyed 111 autistic adults and found that those who didn’t feel accepted as autistic, had higher rates of depression and stress. The study also found that many autistic people “masked” their autism in certain circumstances, which also led to higher rates of depression.

In your work with autistic people have you found this to be the case? Do many of the people you work with "mask" their autism at certain times?

Thanks,

Chris
