Debunking myths about autism in schools

A special educational needs and disabilities coordinator (SENDCO) discusses some of the myths about autism that still prevail in school settings. Gemma Corby’s blog in TES explores why autistic pupils who are “high functioning” or have a diagnosis of Asperger syndrome, do not necessarily find daily life easier. She also dispels myths about gender, autistic people being geniuses and autism being a mental health issue or a learning difficulty.
