Portrayals of autistic people on screen

Disability Scoop reports on a study exploring television and film representations of autistic people. The research, published in Psychiatry Research, found that many autistic characters had an unusually high number of characteristics aligned with the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, and they were also more likely to have a special skill or be geniuses. The authors of the study suggests that we need more autistic characters on screen to show the true diversity of autism, as current representations may reinforce stereotypes.
