Rising exclusion rates for pupils with SEND

The BBC website reports on a 5 Live investigation which has found that thousands of pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are not receiving an education after being formally or informally excluded. The report looks at the case of an autistic teenager who was temporarily excluded from school and didn’t go back for 2 and a half years. Lorraine Dormand, Principal of the National Autistic Society Robert Ogdon School, states they are receiving more referrals for autistic children who have been excluded from schools or “off-rolled”, a situation whereby a pupil is removed from a school roll.
