Autism and controlled eating

2 replies (Jump to last post)

Hi all

We have just published an article by an autistic adult who only recently had a diagnosis. The author gives a very personal and fascinating insight into some of the challenges she experiences with food and eating. She discusses the sensory aspects of eating, the relationship between anxiety and controlled eating and how these can be understood and supported by those around her.

Please do share your thoughts on the article.

I’m a dietitian and I find individual accounts of eating struggles really useful. It is great to read the author's article and I have shared it with a national and international group of dietitians too. Although everyone’s experience is going to be different it is useful that she can tell us some of the reasons she struggles with eating - having that insight means that when working with children and adults who aren’t able to tell us why they have a restricted diet we can have a better guess at underlying reasons.

Thankyou to the author!

I’d love to read more articles of personal experiences like this. It is a roject I’ve thought of doing myself!
