Autistic children and screen time

Hi all.

There has been some discussion lately about whether children should spend long periods of time in front of screens. The Guardian has featured open letters from professionals on both sides of the debate:

https://www.theguardian.com/science/head-quarters/2017/jan/06/screen-time-guidelines-need-to-be-built-on-evidence-not-hype

The Wall St Journal this week published an article by the parent of an autistic child which suggests that technology has offered them and their child:

  • down time
  • targeted therapy
  • behaviour tracking
  • a special interest
  • community.

What are your thoughts on screen time? Are parents/carers of autistic children that you work with concerned about the amount of screen time their child has or do they view it positively?

Thanks,

Chris
